    Get Skype
Open FireFox and go to http://www.skype.com. Click on the Download Skype button.

You get to the page with the downlaods. When you use FireFox from Ubuntu, you go directly into the Skype for Linux page. If not, navigate to the Linux versions. Click on Ubuntu and the download starts.
The file will save on the desktop by default.

    Close FireFox when done.

Double-click the file on the desktop. The name likely starts with skype and the extension is .deb.
    The Package Installer launches.
All you need to do is click on the Install Package button.
The system prompts for the password. Additional packages may be installed as well, but just lay back and wait.

Eventually you get the Installation finished message. Now to the Skype configuration
I'm amazed how simple it is to install new products in Ubuntu. This can be a security issue, but if you only get established software, the risk is minor.

Open Skype from > Application > Internet. While I'm there, I also add the icon to the panel (right-click on the menu option and choose the action). Then launch Skype and it looks as if it's working fine.
